Meet our Slalom Superstar, Kaysen!

In June of 2023, Kaysen and his mother, Stephanie, noticed a rapid decrease in his weight — having recently experienced a growth spurt bring him to an incredible 6’3”, they didn’t think much of it. However, when Kaysen — an avid outdoorsmen and active 16-year-old — began to experience other symptoms, they grew concerned. A routine chest X-ray to rule out pneumonia revealed what no person wants to hear: a large mass. Because it was 4th of July weekend, a referral for more imaging would take longer than usual. Full of confusion and fear, they made the decision to go to the emergency room at Maine Medical Center in hopes of accessing the critical care he may need. That choice exceeded their expectations. They were met by MCCP's Dr. Kastle and social worker, Emily Smolin. That’s when Kaysen was told what he was facing: Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Kaysen’s mother will never forget Dr. Kastle and Emily’s ability to make him feel safe when he was at his most vulnerable state.

According to Stephanie, “MCCP is a safe haven for not just patients, but their families and friends, as well. Everyone at MCCP took the time to get to know Kaysen, and their ability to treat the whole person is special. Treatment is hard on these kids no matter the expected outcomes. Kaysen was able to show up for treatment, and they were able to meet him where he was at on any given day. The good, and the hard days too. The level of compassion this office holds is just as important as the treatments they give.”

Kaysen completed his treatment in December of 2023, stronger and even taller than before! Kaysen and his mother have peace of mind knowing Dr. Weiss and MCCP will continue to monitor his health and to keep him safe. While Kaysen is getting back to doing the things he loves and being with his friends. One of them being skiing at Pleasant Mountain!
